How To Create Great On-Location Headshots – Case Study

nicole winslow Centennial Wealth Management of Ameriprise Financial Services

We had an awesome Bethesda Headshots photo session, at their office location, with Nicole Weslow, Operations Director | Chief Operating Officer of Centennial Wealth Management (which is a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services,LLC), and her entire team recently. They  look so nice and were such a joy to work with.

Thanks again Nicole!

“We used Bethesda Headshots for our entire company’s individual headshots and they were absolutely wonderful. They made everyone feel comfortable, confident, and made sure they were leaving satisfied with the final product. It had rained earlier that day and our headshots were outdoors so they even had tarps and blankets prepared to make sure no one had to walk through the mud for the shots. Totally satisfied with their service and professionalism, and their communication prior to the shoot was top notch as well.”

How To Have A Successful On-Location Headshots Photography Session

When conducting on-location corporate headshot photography session, several concerns need to be addressed to ensure a smooth and successful shoot. Here are some key considerations:

Location Selection:

Choose a location that reflects the professional image of the corporation while providing a suitable backdrop for the headshots. This could be the corporate office, a conference room, or an outdoor area with minimal distractions.

Lighting:

Ensure adequate lighting conditions to capture high-quality headshots. If shooting indoors, utilize natural light from windows or set up artificial lighting equipment such as softboxes or strobes to achieve the desired effect. For this outdoor location, it was crucial to place the subjects in beautiful soft sky light without any direct sun light which avoids squinting and promotes nice natural expression.

Background:

Select a clean and uncluttered background that doesn’t distract from the subject. A plain backdrop or an area with minimal visual noise works best for corporate headshots. We used a wide aperture lens to capture the beautiful soft bokeh look which gives really separation between subject and background. We also intentionally found an outdoor casual background with plenty of distance in with a flattering soft greyed green color tone.

Professional & Conservative Clothing:

Encourage subjects to wear professional and conservative attire that reflects the corporate culture and image. This typically includes business suits, dress shirts, blouses, or attractive dresses.

Minimal Accessories:

Keep accessories minimal and understated to avoid drawing attention away from the subject’s face. Simple jewelry, such as stud earrings or a classic watch, can complement the attire without overpowering the image.

Solid Colors:

Solid colors tend to work best for corporate headshots as they are less distracting and ensure the focus remains on the subject’s face. Neutral tones such as black, white, gray, navy, and beige are safe choices. Avoid busy patterns or overly bright colors that may detract from the overall look.

Well-Fitted Clothing:

Ensure that clothing fits well and flatters the subject’s body shape. Baggy or ill-fitting clothing can appear unprofessional and distract from the headshot.

Avoid Logos and Graphics:

Discourage subjects from wearing clothing with prominent logos, graphics, or slogans, as these can be distracting and may not align with the corporate branding.

Equipment and Backup:

The photographer must bring all necessary photography equipment, including the appropriate camera, lenses, tripod, lighting gear, and backup batteries. It’s also essential to have backups of critical equipment to handle any technical issues that may arise during the shoot.

Posing and Direction:

Providing guidance to subjects on posing and facial expressions to ensure they look confident and professional in their headshots is critical. We direct them with clear instructions and feedback throughout the session to capture the desired look.

Timing:

Coordinate with the company to schedule the photography session at a time that minimizes disruption to business operations. Consider factors such as employee availability and workload to ensure maximum participation.

Communication:

Clearly communicate with the company’s point of contact regarding the objectives, expectations, and logistics of the photo session. Address any concerns or questions they may have beforehand to avoid misunderstandings on the day of the shoot.

Professionalism:

Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the shoot, interacting respectfully with employees and representing the company in a positive light. Be prepared to adapt to unexpected challenges or changes in plans to ensure a successful outcome.
